Our Contemporary Cave is a visual archive of current murals in Vancouver, WA. While compiling images of each mural, I was drawn to the connection between contemporary public art and prehistoric cave paintings. We often speculate about the creators of ancient cave murals—who they were, what their world was like, and why they chose certain forms. This project invites those same questions about our present moment. What will future generations wonder about us when they uncover these murals? What will they interpret about our culture, our values, and our environment? The book’s cover is made from hand-painted sandpaper, chosen to emulate the gritty, weathered surfaces of cave walls. Inside, the layout presents each mural with its title, the artist(s), and a photograph of the work. The murals are organized by neighborhood—Uptown, Downtown, and the International District—with contextual details included wherever available. For this project, I also challenged myself to learn perfect binding by hand. With every project I take on, I aim to learn a new skill—and that process of growth is a core part of my creative practice.
